Thread: Board Game Art and Graphic Design:: Seeking freelance illustrators and graphic designers

by pscgames

Here at PSC Games we’re looking to bring on board some new freelance graphic designers and illustrators to our team!

We’re looking for professionals with previous experience working in the games industry to work on our growing number of board game projects.

We’re not prescriptive about your style of art or the genres you work in – our catalogue is becoming more diverse so we want a stable of great people to match to the most appropriate game theme. Most of our games to date have been historical/military themed but we’ve got Sci Fi and other genres on the horizon.

• For illustrators, we’re after people who produce stunning and detailed box art, and highly thematic gaming art (character portraits, game boards, concept art, etc).
• For graphic designers, we’re after people who accurately lay out rulebooks, punchboards, cards, player aids etc to our games’ specs. Branding work is an added bonus.

To make sure your message gets to the correct person, please send an email with links to your portfolio and a list of games you’ve worked on to: dan@theplasticsoldiercompany.co.uk (replies in this thread and private messages will be read, but emailing gets you directly to the right person).

If you’ve got the skills and experience we need, we’d love to hear from you.

by Azpimar

Hi everyone!

My name is Sol. At this moment I'm working on the last instances for a card game, and I want to keep making game art.
I'm an 2D animator and illustrator with 5 years of experience. In illustration, I focus on character design and game design. On animation I work on 2d traditional and cut out. I have great experience with Photoshop, Illustrator, Toon Boom Harmony and TvPaint Animation. My work is focused on cartoon but my strong skills on anatomy and perspective allows me to work on more realistic illustrations/animations.

To help you get a better sense of my style and work, you can see my porfolio and reel on this links.

Thread: Board Game Art and Graphic Design:: Artist Graphic Designer needed for Heavy Metal based project!

0

by maverick444

I am looking for an eager and reliable artist and graphic designer to help to create the look for my newest game, Bandemonium!
Bandemonium Art Proposal:

1. Name/theme/description of project:

The game is called Bandemonium. It’s a deck-building game where you take on the persona of a band member recruited by the God of Metal so that you can defend Earth by stopping the flow of Demons being sent by Overlords. How will you stop them? Through the power of Heavy Metal!!! You will be gathering instruments, costumes, mascots, and more to build your decibel power and build songs so that they can be released and destroy the Overlords! Each Player will take on the different instrument in one of the many Bands (each with a different theme and loosely based on real life bands) and take the custom starting deck that they will improve throughout the game until the Overlord is defeated. This is a self-developed project by Christopher Brown and Laughing Rogue Games and is ready to go as soon as the art is finished.

While many different styles exist for Heavy Metal, if you look into the game Brutal Legend, you can see the art style that is desired. The art needed is the card art, game box, and graphic design.

2. Collaboration or Compensation:

For the Art and Graphic Design, the payment will be through compensation to be discussed at the time of offer.

3. Budget:

Budget will be based on the level/quality of art and (more importantly) the speed and reliability of the artist. The artist will have free reign to come up with their own unique vision for the art and graphic design as long as it evokes the feel of being in a Heavy Metal Band and combating demonic entities.

4. What are the terms:

The artist/graphic designer will receive, in addition to compensation, up to 4 copies of the game if desired. If a percentage of Kickstarter sales is preferred to compensation, that can be discussed. Laughing Rogue will take ownership and hold the copyright of all materials created for the game although only the digital files are required to be turned over to Laughing Rogue. The copyright for the art files will last for 5 years and will be used for advertisements, promotions, and other materials related to the sale of the board game.

Any art used for the game can be used for the artist’s self-promotion. In addition, as an addition to compensation, the artist’s name will be displayed on the game box cover.

5. Number of pieces:

The pieces required are as follows (specific pieces to be discussed after acceptance). Cards are Standard Poker Sized:
Rule-book/Box cover
32 Individual Band Members
3 Basic Song Card designs using a Music Sheet/Tabs type of style
10 Individual Overlords
14 Starter Deck Cards
35 Demons/Enemies
93 Metal Deck cards (smaller images like Items and so on)

6. Size of art:

Size and color specifications depend upon printer requirements and will be discussed with the chosen artist/graphic designer.

7. Art style desired:

The art for the game, as mentioned, will be a highly stylized look into the world of Heavy Metal music. It should look similar to art from the game Brutal Legend (https://www.doublefine.com/brutallegend/). Now, that being said, the art style can be up to the artist as long as it is based on Heavy Metal and is agreed upon by all parties involved. The right artist can have free reign to design and express themselves freely as long as it is appropriate. That being said, as nudity would restrict sales, it is not acceptable in this case.

8. Deadline:

The game is completed, and I am looking for art to begin promotion. The ideal would be to go to Kickstarter no later than January 2019. I would like the rules/box cover and some images so that I can create promotional posters.

Most importantly is this: Communication, Respect, and Responsibility. I would expect that anyone accepting the contract would provide the art in a timely manner as laid out in the timeline to be discussed with the artist.

I look forward to hearing from any interested parties and I know that this will be a fun and exciting project!

I've written an article as part of a long running series on board game design looking at this question

The Artists Brief

Usually I'm happy with my game design post but for this one I really wanted to solicit opinions from artists. This is one of those topics that can't be understood from just one side of the fence

I am a philosophy professor who works with children to help them think about philosophical questions, using games, activities, and children's literature. Two of us have created a game called Think! and we are looking for an artist. We created a prototype with index cards and have been playing it in various classrooms with 4th and 5th grade elementary school children. The illustrations needed for the game would include the top and sides of a box and one design for one set of cards (the question cards) and different designs for a set of 6 cards (the discussion cards). Happy to send you the description of and rules for the game.

Thanks!

I'm kickstarting a board game in August 2019; I have beta versions already printed and have a fantastic artist. I need some help designing my website and kickstarter page. I could do it myself, but I'm not very good at making it look truly professional. I'm willing to pay in cash for someone who could help me out on this short project. PM me or leave a comment below. Samples preferred.

Hey guys & gals.

This is a paid gig.

I am seeking an artist for my tabletop game Embargo.

I require the following:

- Transport Hub (125mm x 125mm -- to look like a loading dock at a pier)
- 1 Player Board (210mm x 125mm -- with cut outs (will supply template) to look like a loading dock.
- 6 designs of top-down 2D trucks (cards will be 41mm x 63mm)
- 2 designs of top-down 2D vans (cards will be 41mm x 63mm)
- Design of Sabotage Cards (cards will be 41mm x 63mm)

I would prefer vector artwork, but will accept others. I will need to be able to edit the files and I will need to own the rights to the work for me to edit and write the cards; you're welcome to share them to your portfolio once project has been revealed.

The right candidate may have the opportunity to re-design the logo.

Please send me a PM or email at michael@gameswithteeth.com -- with examples of work and rates (including quote would make my life easier).

Thanks.

Thread: Board Game Art and Graphic Design:: Tips for Creature/Monster Design?

0

by ClockWiseBilly

I've been working on a Pokemon inspired board game lately and I'm running up against a wall. I've been struggling a lot lately with creature design.

I've been trying and struggling with original creature designs and was wondering if anyone had any helpful articles or tips.

I can design creatures based on pre-existing archtypes ok (like an interesting variation on a unicorn or dragon), but coming up with something a little more unique or in a more unique style is challenge, especially when I'm trying to strike a nice cool/cute balance that Pokemon has in it's design.

An additional hurdle I'm looking at is communicating what I want to an artist. Typically when working with an artist I will sketch out roughly what I want and then give them a few sentences of additional detail, but the mental block is making it tougher to do.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thread: Board Game Art and Graphic Design:: Looking for amateur artist(s)/illustrator(s) for a Fantasy card game!

by Reelox

Hi!

I am a card game enthusiast who recently started a project with a couple of friends in Sweden called "Wizard Academy". In short, you play as a Wizard, drafting spells from a common deck (spellbook), and placing them in your deck. You then draw cards from your deck to cast spells on your opponents, trying to beat them in a spell-slinging duel.

There are 8 different schools of magic, with a total of 150 spell cards, and 50 minion cards which now need art, and none of us are any good at drawing. Therefore we are now looking for some designers eager to be a part of this project with us! We have playtested the game with placeholder art for a while and want to take the next step in development.

The reason why we specify amateur artists is that we are only doing this on our free time, and don't have the largest budget in the industry, but of course we can negotiate a 'per card price' or similar.

Please drop a comment or send an email to me at sebastianwolsing@gmail.com if you are interested and want to learn more about it

Thread: Board Game Art and Graphic Design:: Could you "finish" a picture of another artist?

by schattentanz

Hi guys,

as my painting skills are basically nonexistant, chances are, I'm probably asking a stupid question now ..

The issue is:

I've got a picture, but didn't get a reply by the artist who drew it originally ..
I'd love to get a printout of this picture, however the printing house demands a bleed of 1,5cm (that's about 3/5th of an inch).

So the question is: If I provide the picture - could any of you fill in the bleeding space?

The picture in question would be this one:

The bleeding area is to the top, the bottom and to the right.

Many thanks for reading - and even more for replying

Kind regards,
Kai
