I've been thinking about the box design / layout for my filmmaking game Roll Camera! (WIP thread here) and I've got two competing concepts at the moment:Option A follows from loads of positive comments I got about my first game, Itchy Feet: the Travel Game, for which the box was designed to look like a suitcase. Some people at Essen even bought it just because of that! And I personally like game boxes that look like things. Plus it might stand out on a shelf.
On the other hand, Option A doesn't really connect emotionally, and I also know that for retail it's not particularly smart because it doesn't really display the mood or artwork of the game very well. It's the one I personally like a bit better but it would probably be Kickstarter-exclusive. I doubt a publisher would keep that design.
Option B plays much more into the minimalist-cartoony style of my art and graphic design in the game. It conveys the rushed mood as well, and it just the more overall standard box art option. I might add a silhouette background of LA or something (although I'm avoiding "Hollywood" imagery, aside from the title font, as much as I can). I think it sells the actual game content better, but I find it less fun as a design. This would probably be what the retail / published version looks like.
I could of course go with Option A and add the cartoony characters on the sides and/or back, or even one or two on a "sticker" on the front.
What do you think?
